Using Transport as a Tool for Poverty Alleviation: A Micro-Enterprise Development Project in Nairobi, Kenya
Partners: ITDG, the Kayole Jua Kali Association and UN-HABITAT
Goal of Project
With the intent of promoting urban use of non-motorized transportation, Intermediate Technology Development Group-Eastern Africa (ITDG-EA) will introduce three new bicycle attachment designs and one bicycle taxi to selected urban communities in the Nairobi area. These communities are Kayole Jua Kali association and Mukuru garbage collectors. These designs are the result of consultation and collaboration of UN-HABITAT, Kayole Jua Kali Association and ITDG-EA. Funding for this project is provided by UN-HABITAT for urban mobility (transport section and waste recycling units). This Project now centers on the testing period to be followed by training of selected Kayole Jua Kali artisans and uptake by other Kayole Jua Kali members and artisans and the community as a whole.
Shall produce and supply a test fleet of three extended bicycles consisting of one garbage collector, a long bed and one mobile food kiosk. ITDG shall also provide a bicycle taxi for market testing. The bicycles for use in the study will be provided by ITDG 3-days prior to use in the study envisioned to take 2 weeks.
Assemble each extension on a bicycle, and test that it is working before turning it over to the test group.
Provide a format for data and information collection on the vehicles during the test phase.
Use the data and information collected to modify the products.
Train selected Kayole Jua Kali Association members who are artisans on fabrication of two extended bicycles that hold most potential. This selection shall be jointly done with ITDG-EA.
Document the project experience for dissemination purposes.
Facilitate Technical review meetings if necessary.
Make and avail drawings of the extended bicycle designs.
Kayole Jua Kali Association shall:
Test 3 of the developed extended bicycles, i.e., the flat bed model, the bicycle taxi and the mobile food kiosk. Mukuru garbage collectors group shall test the garbage collector.
Implement a programme to track the effects of introducing new bicycle technologies designed to increase carrying capacity and share the results of this study with ITDG-EA and UN-HABITAT as per the agreed format.
Avail the data and information required at the end of the 2-week test phase.
Use the provided extended bicycles for the purposes of this study during the test phase. Kayole Jua Kali Association shall own the bicycles after the test phase.
Take due care to protect the bicycles from loss or theft. Any damages to the vehicles shall be repaired by Kayole Jua Kali members at their cost and the repairs recorded.
Permit ITDG-EA and UN-HABITAT to reproduce all photographs taken as part of this study or as publications resulting from this study.
